S'pore ranks 5th for shopping in region

Singapore's shopping scene ranks ahead of Bangkok but behind Kuala Lumpur; a survey finds.

Singapore is the fifth best shopping city in the Asia-Pacific region, ahead of Sydney and Bangkok but lagging behind Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai and Beijing, a survey has found.
While Singapore ranked within the top 10 in most of the criteria in the Globe Shopper Index, compiled by the London-based Economist Intelligence Unit, it fared poorly on affordability.

When it comes to getting a bargain, Singapore ranked a dismal 19th out of 25 cities surveyed in the region. However, Singapore shone in the safety criterion.
The city-state was joint with Auckland and Hong Kong in ranking No.1 in that category. Singapore also ranked a respectable third place, behind Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur, when it came to the quality of the shops on offer here.
The authors of a report that accompanied the survey results emphasised the important role shopping plays in tourism.
"Although comprehensive data is difficult to obtain, everything suggests that shopping plays an integral part in Asian tourism," they said. "In Hong Kong, the latest data shows 87 per cent of tourists go shopping. In Singapore, meanwhile, 20 per cent of all tourist spending in 2011 was on shopping."
The index ranked cities under five main categories: shops, culture and climate, hotels and transport, affordability, and convenience. The rankings were designed to help international shoppers in weighing up which city to visit.
Singapore achieved the fifth highest overall score of 60 out of 100. Hong Kong scored 69, Kuala Lumpur 65, Shanghai 63 and Beijing 61. The high ranking of the two Chinese cities is probably indicative of growing consumer power within China, the report said.
"Probably the biggest surprise of the index is the relatively high ranking of Shanghai and Beijing. In third and fourth place respectively, they are placed just ahead of Singapore, which has a much bigger reputation as a shopping destination," it said. "Chinese tourists are gaining a global reputation as shoppers and it makes sense for domestic locations to try to tap that market as well."
In fact, the report suggested that Hong Kong, which ranked as the best shopping city in Asia-Pacific, had benefited from a boom in visitors from mainland China who tend to spend significantly more than average and are frequently looking to "avoid substantial sales taxes back home".
The report said Kuala Lumpur had managed to secure second place in the overall rankings as its shopping environments combined low prices with a good range of products in a large number of stores, including three of the world's 10 biggest shopping malls.
A separate Globe Shopper Index for European cities ranked London as first, Madrid and Barcelona as joint second, Paris as third, followed by Rome in fourth and Berlin, fifth.
The Asia-Pacific survey was conducted between January and February this year. Methodology included gathering data from official sources, such as tourism bureaus and airports. Contributors were also used to collect prices from shops around the region.
The Economist Intelligence Unit is part of the Economist Group and founded as an in-house research unit for The Economist newspaper and commissioned by Switzerland-based shopping tourism company Global Blue. -STRAITS TIMES.COM

US$1.7 billion in gift card credit will go unspent in 2012

25 per cent of recipients will not spend the full amount of credit on their gift card, says this study

More than four in five Americans will exchange gift cards in 2012.
The US market for gift cards has grown to $110 billion this year, equal to China's defence budget.
According to the latest research by CEB TowerGroup, this surge in popularity is being driven by credit card companies, whose "open-loop" cards can be redeemed anywhere and equate to $40 billion in sales, as well as restaurant gift cards said to be worth $19 billion in 2012 and merchant cards such as iTunes vouchers (worth $36 billion).
However, electronic gift cards will only total US$3 billion, suggesting that they are yet to move into the mainstream.
Nevertheless 267 million Americans (roughly 85 per cent of the population) are expected to have exchanged gift cards by the end of the year and 75 per cent of recipients will spend the full amount of money on their card.
And while 30 per cent of recipients will actually spend US$25 more than the value of the card, the amount of money left on gift cards that consumers will never spend will reach US$1.7 billion, which, although 30 per cent lower than in 2011, is still a significant amount.
CEB TowerGroup's figures suggest that by 2015 the gift card market in the US will be worth US$130 billion, with electronic gifting growing in popularity, with sales expected to hit US$16 billion. -- AFP RELAXNEWS

Mobile Shopping: Fab Updates Android App, Expects A Third Of 2012 Global Sales To Be Mobile (Updated)

Online design focused shopping site, Fab, has given its Android app its first update, more than a year on from the original app launch. The ecommerce site, which boasts more than nine million users, says mobile is an increasingly important component of its business — with almost half of its users using their phones to buy goods via the site, and approximately a third of traffic and sales coming from mobile.
Fab’s global mobile sales almost doubled in the first half of November compared to last year. For the year 2012, it expects 33 percent of global sales to come from mobile compared to 15 percent last year. Mobile sales growth is being driven by strong demand for holiday 2012 gifts, such as men’s hats and scarves, unique novelty items, technology products and gadgets — lifting sales 298 percent overall from a year ago.
“Nearly 50 percent of our members are now buying through their mobile phones,” says Fab CEO and Founder Jason Goldberg in a statement. “With that we challenged ourselves to think beyond the existing apps and to start from scratch to build something for the very mobile users.”
The new Android app has a focus on imagery, and brings a raft of new features — including
  • A live feed of activity on Fab
  • FREE SHIPPING on orders above 70 EUR/GBP
  • Login with Facebook
  • Browsing design by colour, price, and category
  • Sharing your favourite designs on Facebook, Twitter, email, and SMS — and earn credits!
The redesign looks to have brought Fab’s Android app experience in line with the overhaul of its iOS apps last month — with a clean-looking interface, and strong, bold imagery showcasing product design.
Fab notes that just five days after the launch of its iPhone and iPad apps, mobile amounted to more than 15 percent of its sales in Europe.
Update: Fab has now confirmed the app was a global release — rolling out to all its markets on Saturday, namely the U.S., Canada and 24 countries in Europe.
It also said the main differences between this version and the earlier Android app are additional search functionality, optimization for Android tablets and social features.
Boosting usage of its mobile app on the Android platform is something the company is keen to do. Fab’s CEO previously told ABC News its app usage skews heavily in favour of iOS. “We do have an Android app, but we find that only two percent of our usage is on Android,” he said last month, adding: “We wish we had more Android usage.”
As Business Insider has noted, Fab is losing out to rival shopping service Fancy on mobile. Fab’s Android app has between downloaded between 100,000 and 500,000 times on Google Play — while Fancy has had between 1 million and 5 million downloads.

Free Shipping Day Returns to eBay, PayPal

Procrastinating holiday shoppers, rejoice. This coming Monday, Dec. 17, is “free shipping day,” a recurring one-day holiday whereby consumers can comfortably still order gifts online and know they will be delivered gratis by Christmas Eve.
eBay and PayPal will once again be active participants. Currently, over half of all eBay transactions involve free shipping. Of those transactions, a third are conducted through our Fast N’ Free program, which guarantees tracking and delivery within four days. Furthermore, all purchases from some of our major retail partners, like Toys R Us, always ship free.
Last year alone, eBay averaged roughly 600,000 daily free shipping transaction between Thanksgiving and Christmas. We expect that figure to increase 33 percent to roughly 900,000  free shipping transactions during the same period  this year. PayPal saw similar results last year.
In total, sales from free shipping day last year topped $1 billion and 2,600 retailers participated, notes the PayPal blog. According to comScore, it was the highest earning Friday in retail history and marked the first time more than half (52 percent) of all transactions included free shipping. With the growth in the number of people making purchases with their smart phones and tablets, we could see another record year for free shipping day.
