'Look under the hood' when it comes to Handbag Maker Michael Kors

Kate Spade and Michael Kors storefronts.

Premium handbag maker Michael Kors posted better-than-expected earnings results Tuesday. However, retail analyst and Telsey Advisory Group CEO Dana Telsey said it's important to dig below the surface.

"I think, overall, when I look at the name, I think yes, you had a sequentially improved comp, earnings came in better than expected, but look under the hood," she told CNBC's "Fast Money: Halftime Report" Wednesday. "The reason why the numbers are better than expected: You had lower SG&A, lower tax rate, you had a share repurchase."

Telsey added that the handbag industry is decelerating off a larger base but Kate Spade might still be a good buy.

"I think the difference between KATE and KORS, it's a smaller business, it's off a smaller base, it has a more extensive product offering," she said. "It doesn't have as much exposure to the department stores as what both Coach and Kors have, and their comps are running positive because it is such a smaller base."

The most useful bag in the world gets reinvented

One of the most useful bags in the world, the Longchamp Le Pliage, has been reinvented as the Le Pliage Neo, now with a fabulous new strap and leather trim

Just about everyone I know has at least one Longchamp Le Pliage bag; I’ve got two of the Le Pliage Cuir (or leather) version. The fact that these bags can be handily folded up to save space is probably the most obvious reason why, but the long-lasting nylon and useful shoulder strap are just as important.

The new Longchamp Le Pliage Neo
Now Longchamp has reinvented its classic bag once again, the new Le Pliage Neo is made of satin-finish nylon and trimmed with tone-on-tone leather that has a graphic cross grain pattern. That handy shoulder strap is now thicker and more padded too so that when you stuff everything you own into your Le Pliage it won’t dig into your shoulder quite so much.
The Longchamp Le Pliage Neo will be available in black, navy, poppy, hydrangea and bilberry but there are two limited edition colours too; orange and emerald. Plus the bags will be available in small, medium and large for the handbags and large for the shoulder bag. The Le Pliage Neos are priced from $217 to $408 depending on the size.

Tumi channels the golden age of travel with its Fall 2013 collection

SEE PHOTOS: Luxury travel and handbag brand Tumi focused on the golden age of air travel in the 1960s for the theme of its Fall 2013 collection; expect clean lines & retro craftsmanship

American luxury travel and handbag brand Tumi has focused on the 1960s golden era of air travel for its Fall 2013 collection that features iconic colours like Baltic and navy blue, orange and tangerine, ginger, lava and Bordeaux mixed with classic neutrals on streamlined, early modernist shapes.

TUMI ASTOR
Tumi bags Fall 2013 DECOR ASTOR 1
Debuting for Fall 2013 is the new Astor collection of super slick briefcases and soft carry-on bags, designs that are minimalist and elegant enough to be snapped up by fashionistas of the male, and female, persuasion. Using textured saffiano leather, squared-off shapes and refined hardware, the Astor collection stands out for providing style with the substance of practical pockets, straps and handles.
There is a classic, yet ironically modern, briefcase; two sizes of envelop document cases that easily do duty as clutch bags that can fit your tablet; a soft duffle bag and a soft carry-on – either of which are perfect for short trips and both have the Tumi “add-a-bag” sleeve for adding more room or a wheeled case.

TUMI BEACON HILL
Tumi bags Fall 2013 DECOR BEACON HILL
If you’re looking for a handbag that will keep you organised and yet remain super stylish at the same time, the Tumi Beacon Hill series just might fit the bill. The Smith Jetsetter bag has a new, more structured shape, and comes with substantial inner pockets with double zip access; a padded sleeve for you laptop or tablet and roomy exterior pockets for stashing your phone or other daily necessaries. The Black Ombre version in suede and patent leather has the elegance of any “it” bag; the Smith Jetsetter is also available in plain black leather, brown suede and a slate jacquard.

TUMI VOYAGEUR

If you’re looking for a pop of colour and pattern for your bag, check out the Tumi Voyageur collection with its fun deco-inspired floral print in navy and lava red; the Brive Sling backpack is super cute; and super practical. You can swap from a backpack style to a sling-bag very easily, which makes this a very versatile choice for commuters.

TUMI VILLA

For more colour with a sophisticated edge, have a look at the Tumi Villa collection of coated canvas with leather details in classic shapes made modern via bright shades like tangerine and cobalt blue. If you prefer something a little less in-your-face, the range is also available in indigo blue, Baltic blue and Earl Grey, and there’s a shape for every occasion from briefcase to its best-selling Quintessential tote bag and the fabulous Malta Crossbody bag which fits your essentials like wallet, phone and gadgets.

TUMI PRISM & TUMI LUGGAGE

These are just some of the great new options that Tumi has released for Fall 2013; there’s a whole range of super practical men’s bags that are elegant enough for women to use as well, especially if you tend to cart around half your office; as well as a large range of small leather goods in a wide variety of on-trend colours; and, of course, Tumi’s well-regarded luggage options.
Basically if you’re looking for new options for a hard-wearing, practical, yet fashion-forward, bag you need to check out the Tumi Fall 2013 collection; you’ll be surprised at what you’ll find and will probably end up taking home more than one.

Hit the road in Nike LunarGlide+ 5

Nike’s new LunarGlide+ 5 is the perfect combination of lightweight and adaptability, providing comfort and stability to runners

If you want to be light on your feet on runs but the thought of running in barefoot shoes – running shoes with minimal support – sends shudders down your spine, the Nike LunarGlide+ 5 is the answer both you and your feet have been waiting for.
First up, the Lunarlon system features a resilient but soft and light foam core that provides exceptional cushioning. Your run is made more comfortable with the LunarGlide+ 5’s Nike Flywire technology that delivers an adaptive, glove-like feel for a custom fit – blisters arising from friction between your foot and shoe will be a thing of the past.
The Dynamic Support system is what really sets the LunarGlide+ 5 apart from the rest. Flat-footed runners will enjoy the stability the two-part midsole system provides and also how the Dynamic Support helps the foot more efficiently absorb the shock from hitting the ground - something flat-footed individuals naturally have a problem with.

Puma celebrates 45 years of the Suede with #forthestreet contest

Help Puma celebrate the 45th anniversary of the Suede sneaker with the Show Your Love #forthestreet Instagram contest; snap photos of street signs to win a pair of personalised Puma Suede sneakers

If you are not an avid b-boy fan or street dancer, you might want to know the two defining points of a pair of Puma Suede sneakers: They are the only shoe sport fat laces in the Puma archive style of the 1970s and feature a distinctive leaping cat on the heel cap.
Seen on early breakdancing crews New York City Breakers and the Rock Steady Crew in the 1980s, the Puma Suede sneakers started out dancing with the b-boyers and never looked back. After going through many revisions from its original version, Puma has released the Future Suede, which retains its 1968 profile but has been tweaked for aesthetics and performance.

If you shied away from these sneakers because of their thick soles, you’ll be glad to hear that Puma has ditched the heavy bottom for a lightweight sole in the Future Suede. The shoes are decked out with Puma Trinomic hexagons, heel clips, and eyelets so people will still be able to recognise your Suedes from a distance and through your fast footwork.
Puma is celebrating the 45th year of the Suede in 2013, and are giving away a pair of personalised Puma Suede sneakers yes, you could have your name embroidered on your very own pair of plush leather sneakers with a napped finish, so you can show your love for the street, Puma and b-boying.

From now until July 7, 2013, submit photos of your favourite street, alley or road sign in Singapore with the hashtags #forthestreet #SG through Instagram. Add a short three-word description with some spunk, because every week, the most creative or unique entry will be picked. You could also get a Puma t-shirt with your winning Instagram photo printed on it.

The big prize of a pair of personalised Suedes will go to the grand winner of the Instagram contest. The best thing is, you don’t need to own any Puma sneakers to win a pair of Puma Suedes, so hit the streets and hashtag away!

Get a piece of J.W. Anderson’s SS13 collection now at Club 21

Indulge yourself with pieces from award-winning British fashion designer J.W. Anderson’s Spring Summer 2013 collection now available at Club 21

The name of J.W. Anderson, short for John William Anderson, hasn’t left the tip of the industry’s tongue since Browns bought his namesake line of menswear in 2008. Discovering that it was women buying the collection, the young designer has been producing womenswear ever since.
It is not surprising that the designer continues to remain the talk of the town after receiving the Emerging Talent Award for his ready-to-wear collections at the 2012 British Fashion Awards. Fashionistas rejoice, for his Spring Summer 2013 line has arrived in Singapore, available at style emporium Club 21.

This season, the young Irish fashion designer took a break from his signature androgynous style. He has infused more girly elements into his play on the masculine/feminine theme, with oversized frills on shorts or asymmetrically down the hems of long tops reminiscent of the Jazz Age.
The above-the-knee hems and waists of dresses dropped to the hipline remind you of the flapper styles of the 1920s. Even the frilly clutches seem to allude to women’s fashion of that period.

Anderson has, however, not entirely eschewed his trademark blend of androgyny; he freshened things up in the collection for SS13 with an athletic cut on lightweight dresses and a consistent skirt-over-pants look. There’s no need to fret over matching two separate pieces anymore with Anderson’s pants with outer-skirt flap, it has already been done for you.
The tops feature prints and patterns on cotton, complete with flaps, and are versatile enough to match skirts, shorts or pants. This collection is definitely a good place to dip your toes into first, and then perhaps dive, into androgynous, retro, high fashion.

Pretty Ballerinas shoes now available in Singapore

Spanish ballet flats brand Pretty Ballerinas is now available at Robinsons in Singapore

If you’re the kind of girl who lives in ballerina flats – like most of us here at herworldPLUS – then you need to head straight to Robinsons to check out Pretty Ballerinas, a new-to-Singapore brand with its roots in Menorca, Spain.
Pretty Ballerinas shoes now available in Singapore
From left: The Marilyn, The Faye and The Shirley
Pretty Ballerinas started off as an online boutique in February 2005, selling its flats via prettyballerinas.com, but soon opened its first brick-and-mortar store in the heart of London on Mayfair in 2007.
Pretty Ballerinas is by no means a young, inexperienced brand. Its parent company, Mascaro, has had a long history – since 1918 – of making ballet flats by hand. This expertise, combined with their savvy marketing skills and flair for designing shoes that women want, has transformed it into a brand that is available in more than 16 countries around the world.
Each style is named after a female screen or music icon, like the Marilyn, the Shirley and the Rita. This is meant to help customers remember their favourite style in a pinch, especially when faced with the eye-dazzling variety of ballet flats.

The Rosario
My personal favourite is the Rosario – I believe it is named after the Spanish singer Rosario Flores – I love the rounded toe cap and the barely negligible heel.
Ballerina flat lovers, this is what you’ve been waiting for.

Monique Lhuillier: Footwear line was natural

Red carpet designer Monique Lhuillier designs a footwear collection to accompany her dresses

Monique Lhuillier's footwear collection was born from her desire "to dress women head-to-toe".
The designer is known for creating red carpet gowns that have been worn by stars such as Emma Stone, Jennifer Garner and Gwyneth Paltrow.
The dresses she designs require the wearer to sport a fancy heel, which is why she created her own shoe line.
Monique Lhuillier: Footwear line was natural
"Expanding into footwear was a natural extension of my gown designs. I’ve always wanted to dress women head-to-toe and had been pursuing the possibility of a shoe collection for quite some time," she told fashionista.com.
"It was challenging to find the right partners, because I wanted the shoes to be luxurious and up to the same standards as my RTW and bridal collections. We did our due diligence and found the right manufacturer in Italy and we have been thrilled with the results. It was worth the wait!"
The Los Angeles-based designer has spoken before about how much she enjoys dressing women for different occasions. She hopes her shoe line - which contains day, evening and wedding pieces - will inspire customers to mix up their style.
"I designed these styles with versatility in mind. The lace pump, for example, is a great wardrobe staple. It can be worn with skinny jeans and a tailored blouse during the day or a beautiful cocktail dress for evening. And I love it when a bride adds glamour to her look with an exceptional heel," she gushed. "Some of the metallic styles for evening can also be great options for a bride who wants to have a bit more fun with her accessories."

Philip Stein’s new Sleep Bracelet aims to provide quality sleep

Making use of natural frequencies, the Philip Stein Sleep Bracelet is said to improve the quality of your sleep

How long ago has it been since you got a good night’s sleep? For some it may have been just two nights ago, but for others, it could very well have been at least a month ago.
And that seems to be the norm for most. Quality, uninterrupted sleep is hard to come by and it’s no wonder people are willing to spend huge amounts of money to make sure they get just that.
Swiss watch brand Philip Stein has just the answer to your slumber problems – the new Philip Stein Sleep Bracelet. Known for their luxury watches that feature a frequency-based technology to help improve one’s overall well-being and health, they have outdone themselves by producing a sleep bracelet.
Just like the watches, the sleep bracelet contains a disc that is set to pick up a certain range of frequencies, depending on the purpose. The sleep bracelet mainly picks up the earth’s natural frequency – which is the same frequency a person has when we’re at a completely relaxed state and wearing the sleep bracelet which emits these optimum frequencies will help balance and calm down our own.
Simply put it on 15 minutes before you intend to go to bed and wait to experience it.
The result? It’s said to allow users to falling asleep faster, into deeper sleep and waking up feeling more refreshed.
The sleep bracelet has also been engineered to ensure total comfort with lightweight, skin-friendly strap with perforated holes to allow your skin to breathe and minimise perspiration.
With Oprah Winfrey as a fan, we were definitely stoked to try it out and see how well it works.
After using it for two weeks, we’ve noticed a change in our sleeping patterns – it didn’t take as much tossing and turning in bed before we were fast asleep and we even woke up naturally, before our alarms. We experienced deeper sleep and felt refreshed in the morning. It’s said to work even better for people who travel often and are unable to fall asleep in planes, with some professing that it even eliminates jet lag.
If you’re having issues with your sleep, it may just be time for you to give the Philip Stein Sleep Bracelet a go.

Singapore’s latest mall is entirely virtual

The Virtual Mall at www.thevmall.com.sg is the first of it’s kind in Singapore; shop from the comfort of home

If you’re looking for a range of products in one place but can’t be bothered braving the crowds at a mall then you need to check out Singapore’s newest mall, The Virtual Mall.
Created by Mr HT Chong after he couldn’t find a reasonably priced bricks and mortar retail space for his beauty products, The Virtual Mall is exactly what it says it is – a mall with shops, escalators and different levels, only all of it is “virtual”, only existing online.
The Virtual Mall Singapore DECOR EXTERIOR
The Virtual Mall Singapore DECOR GROUND FLOOR

Apparently the virtual space even uses the same sort of psychology as real malls do, taking into considerations things like the movements people make in real shopping spaces. The “shops” are even located in the same “spaces” like real ones so you can easily find it whenever you return to the website.
You can “walk past” a shop by mousing over a logo and reading the pop-up description of the brands, then you can decide to “enter” the shop by clicking on the logo. Once you’re “inside” the store you can browse its items – but unlike real stores, the merchandise here is all displayed in the same way for ease of use.
“The virtual mall is designed into 5-levels, easier for shoppers to digest instead of 20 pages of dresses. The objective is to help retailers, to give them an alternative platform and not lose their branding and exclusivity,” says HT.
There is even a Virtual Café where shoppers can get together and share views and comments via a forum; there’s a redemption centre for shoppers to redeem gifts and vouchers and there are also storewide promotions, deliveries for free if you spend $100 and a launch promotion of $5 off for every $100 you spend.
There are about 20 or so brands over three “floors” currently available at The Virtual Mall including World of Sports, Missha, Future State and Blush.
Check out The Virtual Mall at www.thevmall.com.sg.

New Jovian Femme label to be exclusive to Zalora.sg

SEE PHOTOS: Malaysian designer Jovian’s very first casualwear collection, called Jovian Femme, will be exclusive to Singapore-based shopping site Zalora.sg

If you love the intricate and feminine designs of one of Malaysia’s top fashion designers, Jovian Mandagie, then you’ll be excited to learn that his very first casualwear collection, entitled Jovian Femme, will be available on Singapore-based shopping site Zalora.sg from January 31, 2013.

Looks from the Jovian Femme collection by Jovian Mandagie that will be exclusively available on Zalora.sg
Perhaps best known for his elegant, modern yet modest, clothes for “Raya” or Malay celebrations, Jovian is also the creator of some stunning demi-couture and couture pieces as well.
Jovian has worked with stars like Dato’ Siti Nurhaliza, Anita Sarawak and Erra Fazira, as well as royalty including former HRH Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah (Queen Consort), HRH Tuanku Zara Salim Davidson (The wife of Crown Prince of Perak) and HRH Tuanku Fauziah binti Tengku Abdul Rashid (Queen of the Royal houses of Perlis).
Now branching out into more affordable ready-to-wear lines – Jovian’s special collection for Hari Raya Puasa in 2012 sold out almost as soon as it hit websites and stores – you too can snap up a piece of Jovian’s elegant fashion.
His Jovian by Jovian Mandagie collection of modest two-piece outfits appropriate for Muslim women, is already available on Zalora.sg and comprise elegant looks for day and evening wear at very reasonable prices. They are modern in the use of cut, materials, prints and colours but remain perfectly appropriate.
During a recent visit to Singapore to judge the Ratu beauty pageant organised by TV channel Suria, we had a chance to sit down with the warm and friendly designer to discuss his work and his plans for 2013.
Jovian Femme by Jovian Mandagie on Zalora DESIGNER
Malaysian fashion designer Jovian Mandagie
Why are your modest designs so different from the traditional Malay-Muslim outfits?
I suppose it’s because I have an awareness of trends, silhouette and the way I use embellishment on my pieces. I love being experimental and I also do a lot of research with my friends and my female family members.
When it came to adding peplums to my Hari Raya collection last year I knew it was a major trend in mainstream fashion, but I worked on the design to ensure that it wasn’t too tight, for example.
It’s all about respecting what people really want, that’s the reason why this collection [the Raya collection] took three years to design. I did my first Raya* collection in 2009 actually, but it was fairly traditional by comparison to the 2012 one.
How do you see the impact of modern design on traditional dress for Malay women?
I want my designs to be worn all the time, I want women to be able to wear them to work and not just for Raya or special occasions. I wanted to include practicality – which comes from using more modern shapes and materials – in my designs. I infused the traditional look with more modern cuts. It’s a new era for wearing the Baju Kurung. Women are actually excited again to wear their traditional clothing.
What are you planning for the future?
My ready-to-wear line Jovian Femme is exciting. All the samples for the collection are created in my couture house, so the cutting is the same quality; it’s just that the pieces are at a more reasonable price.
I’m also working on my next Raya collection too, I’ll be including a ‘mini me’ collection for girls as well and also men’s Baju Raya outfits; no boys yet though.
On top of all that, I’m also planning a store for Singapore in 2014 and will open my Bangsa store in May this year [2013]. I’m really busy!
