Kroger takes over Harris Teeter
Kroger's $2.5 billion merger with Harris Teeter was completed at the end of January.
"We are pleased that our merger is complete and look forward to bringing together the best of Kroger and Harris Teeter to benefit our customers, associates and shareholders," said W. Rodney McMullen, chief executive officer of Kroger.
Together, the company operates 2,641 supermarkets across 34 states and the District of Columbia.
Harris Teeter has continued to operate its stores as a subsidiary of The Kroger Co. There have been no substantial changes to Harris Teeter stores since the merger.
Kroger has opened several Kroger Marketplace stores in Hampton Roads, which feature both groceries and a complete line of home and personal goods.
Farm Fresh renovates
Kroger wasn't the only chain making changes this year. A number of Farm Fresh stores saw their first renovations in more than a decade.
"We have some stores that haven't been reset in 12 years," company president Micky Nye said. "Under our new program, every store will be completely reset every two years. For years, there's been no investment in these stores at all, and the new SuperValu leadership has finally made it a priority."
The first renovations were celebrated with midnight sales that were met by hundreds of jubilant customers.
In June, shoppers lined up outside the Coliseum Drive store about an hour before the midnight opening, and the energy was high. Katherine Marrin of Newport News was so excited to shop for deals that she enticed the waiting crowd — which wrapped around the side of the building — to participate in shouts and cheers. At one point, Marrin punctuated a round of "the wave" with a back flip.
