As
the saying goes – you are what you eat. Sure, those jars of creams and
monthly facials help, but there’s no escaping breakouts or ageing skin
if you persist with an unhealthy eating lifestyle.
Here’s what you should be loading up on for healthy-looking skin:
1. Fat
We
might sound a little crazy here. But don’t be afraid of consuming fat.
Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats provide essential fatty acids
that can act as a natural moisturizer for your skin, keeping it supple.
They can be found in avocados, fish, nuts and seeds. They also come with
a healthy dose of vitamin E which will help protect against free
radical damage (damaged cells caused by external toxins such as
pollution).
2. Kale
Even
Anna Wintour’s daughter, Bee Schaffer, is obsessed with kale. This
super food contains lutein, a powerful antioxidant, important for normal
skin cell development and healthy skin tone. When juiced with a bit of
lemon, apple and ginger and a tiny hint of refreshing mint, it turns
into refreshing, green lemonade.
3. Greek Yoghurt
Protein
you get from eating dairy helps firm skin, so it’s more resistant to
lines. We like Greek yoghurt because its protein content is often double
as compared to regular yoghurt. Mix in fresh berries for an extra
antioxidant boost, as well as to sweeten your morning treat.
4. Chocolate
Cocoa
in chocolate actually helps to hydrate your skin, making it firmer and
more supple. Dark chocolate contains high level of flavonols, a potent
type of antioxidant. For maximum results, indulge in chocolate that has
at least 70 per cent cacao. Plus, caffeine in chocolate may also
temporarily reduce skin puffiness.
5. Beetroot
Yes,
it’s annoying when beetroot stain our fingers. But for all its skin
clearing properties – it’s definitely worth all the hassle. These purple
roots are particularly high in vitamin A, as well as potassium, sodium,
calcium, magnesium, and vitamin E, which is essential for epidermal
health and healing. Say goodbye to stubborn scars!
Crash diets
Stop
your crash diet! Repeatedly losing and regaining weight causes sagging,
wrinkles and stretch marks. Crash diets are often result in a shortage
of essential vitamins too. Over long periods of time, yo-yo dieting will
impact the condition of your skin and more importantly, it isn’t good
for your health and well-being.
Fried food
It’s
finger-licking good, no doubt. Crispy bits of fried chicken, browned
bacon… it’s all impossible to resist sometimes. But when ingredients
high in sugar and fat are fried, glycation, a skin-damaging end product,
is produced. Opt for cooking methods that involve lots of water like
steaming and stewing.
