5 snakeskin brands you need to know

For the best in genuine snakeskin accessories, check out these five brands in Singapore

When the clock strikes midnight this year on February 10, it will be officially the Year of the Snake for Chinese people all over the world.
We are all for adopting a snake to herald the new year but the fork-tongued creatures aren’t exactly a fun pet to keep at home. Snakeskin products – namely bags, shoes and accessories – however, are the best way you can do so without having to get close to one that is alive and kicking, so we’ve rounded up 5 of the best snakeskin brands in Singapore you can look to for your swanky new year accessory.

1) Q Python by Quintessential

1.Puffy oval clutch, $299, Large envelope fuchsia, $199, Carrie stitched in navy, $239, 4. Q flippies water snake flip-flops in pink, $59, 5. Alexa clutch in mix painted, $299, 6. iPhone pouch in lime yellow, $39
When it comes to its range of snakeskin bags and flip-flops, Q Python keeps a ear to the ground. The brand takes design cues from colours of the season as well as bag trends, but most of all, it keeps in mind what customers have been looking for and will produce them if the demand is sufficiently high.
A brainchild of multi-label accessories boutique Quintessential, Q Python was first introduced last year to the delight of snakeskin fans. The brand really shines when it comes to colour; it has over 10 colours for each of eight different styles of clutches they carry, with a few shades for each hue.
Prices begin at $59 for the flip-flops and at $139 for the clutches.
Quintessential is located at #02-01 Pacific Plaza

2)      Ling Wu

Ling Wu’s designer Ling Goh is meticulous about every bag she makes for Ling Wu. They have to be comfortable - no painful shoulder straps - and aesthetically beautiful. Her buttery-soft snakeskin bags and pouches are already firm favourites of the local fashion community for its playful, rock n’ roll twists like fringe and stud details as well as artistic ruching.
What we love though is the additional touches of luxe within her bags: many of the interior pockets are trimmed with more snakeskin, something you probably won’t find elsewhere.
Prices begin from $52 for an iPhone cover and go up to $980 for a python hobo bag.

3)      CasLee

If there is a certain bag style you’re looking for, this three-year-old label from Indonesia is likely to have it. While its offerings aren’t limited to snakeskin - ostrich, lizard and crocodile are also part of the roster - python skin bags, pouches and accessories are what they do best. Helmed by the brand’s founder and lead designer Natalie Djojonegoro, an avid fan of exotic leather, CasLee’s extensive range of snakeskin purses are fully lined with ultrasuede for an added touch of luxe but are comparatively cheaper than other brands who do the same.
Prices start at $20 for the accessories, $200 for the clutches and go up to $600 for the bags.
CasLee is available at Quintessential and at www.caslee.com

4)      IIE
IIE
1 & 2. Rowan python lace up ballerinas, $175, Doorstep Luxury, 3 & 4. Rowan pyton ballerinas, $165
The quest for shoes that didn’t make model-turned-designer Tui Sang feel like crying everytime she slipped into a pair, led her to a cordwainer that was able to craft stylish flats she could finally wear. These eventually turned out to be IIE’s claim to fame, snakeskin ballet flats so comfortable you can walk all day and everywhere in them. Each style is available in a myriad of colours, with new colours every four months.
Sang also introduces new cuts twice a year, overseeing the production of every design and tweaking them until she is satisfied. Part of her repetoire includes two styles of sandals, wedges and heels; these she produces biannually. Such diligence over quality means that they are not mass produced, so you probably won’t find 10 other people on the street wearing the same pair. And that’s definitely music to our ears.
Prices start at $115 for sandals, $165 for the ballet flats and go up to $350.
IIE ballet flats are available at Doorstep Luxury and Club Showroom.

5)      Emblem

For a uniquely Asian twist on snakeskin purses, look no further than Emblem - a local accessory brand started in 2011 by French-Singaporean Mia Gigandet. Gigandet designs everything herself with her standout pieces being the snakeskin bags that come with mini antique Chinese door knockers.
Emblem is known for more than just its Asian-influenced bags though; its range of leather-soled snakeskin ballet flats have received rave reviews on comfort, durability and style.
What’s more, her snakeskin products won’t give you a guilty complex; she abides by the strict protocols of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora & Fauna (CITES), which safeguards against endangering wild animals for trade.
Prices of Emblem flats begin at $149 and bags go up to $500.
